What is
thickness measurement?
It is a non-destructive ultrasonic test in which thicknesses are measured in the structures of ships and floating structures, following classification rules depending on the type of ship (tanker, bulkcarrier, etc.) and the age since its construction, taken in five-year intervals. The classification rules are regulated by the ship classification societies and their umbrella association, IACS, which accredits the companies and their technicians.

Thickness measurement is one of the actions established by the international classification of ships to control the operation and maintenance process of a ship or platform. Its purpose is to determine the condition and resistance of the structures of the ship or marine platform and, consequently, to guarantee the buoyancy and the absence of collapse of the naval structures. In this way, human life, the marine environment, the value of the transported goods and the value of the vessel itself are preserved.
The test is carried out by measuring the thickness of the ship's structural elements in the areas determined by the rules of the Classification Societies. After analyzing the results of the measurements, it is possible to classify a certain area of the ship as a substantial corrosion continent or declare the need for it to be renovated by a new structure.
Eurocontrol is certified by the classification societies ABS, DNV GL and RINA to perform thickness measurements on all types of ships and offshore units worldwide.
