WELL - Building Sustainability Certification

WELL certification is the first building assessment tool focused on the well-being and health of its occupants. Based on performance rather than prescription, it prioritises user comfort and analyses the relationship between health and the built environment in which we live and work.

WELL certification was developed in the United States by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) in 2013. It has subsequently evolved into what is now known as WELL v2, which was launched in 2020.

WELL certification is a dynamic scoring system for buildings and communities that identifies, measures and monitors the characteristics of built spaces that impact the health and well-being of occupants.

The main objective of WELL certification is to improve the well-being and health of people within built spaces. The measures recommended by WELL focus on creating healthier, more comfortable and productive indoor environments, considering aspects such as air quality, lighting, water, nutrition, thermal and acoustic comfort, as well as mental and emotional well-being. WELL certification seeks to optimise the design and operation of buildings to promote the physical and mental well-being of occupants while promoting greater sustainability and resource efficiency.

The focus of WELL certification is on key concepts that affect the health and well-being of occupants. They are divided into 10 distinct categories that have mandatory guidelines and improvement guidelines and are known as the WELL Building Standard concepts. These concepts are: air, water, nutrition, lighting, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community.

Sustainability certification
In a society that is increasingly aware of the need to take actions to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in buildings, there are measures, such as sustainability certifications aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which are an essential tool for those organisations that want to contribute to the conservation of the environment and the well-being of the users of their buildings.
