Energy audit

For many companies, the energy bill represents a major part of production costs, which is also subject to the volatility of energy prices. Reducing energy consumption is a financial issue, but it is also an environmental issue. Conducting an energy audit is essential to know the energy performance of a company, to know what possible improvements can be implemented and, where applicable, to comply with RD 56/2016.

What is

an energy audit?

The regulatory energy audit is a complete diagnosis of the energy performance of a building, industry, process or system. It determines whether the structure should be considered as a heat sink, by targeting the areas of loss. Subsequently, the energy audit recommends the implementation of corrective actions, which may be more or less costly, with a view to reducing the level of consumption and making energy savings. It concerns heating, lighting, domestic hot water and ventilation. It covers energy consumption in kWh and greenhouse gas emissions in CO2 equivalent.
This audit is a real management tool that allows you to :
  • Map and analyse your site's consumption (electricity, gas, etc.)
  • Identify the most consuming items and uses and highlight the problems that can be corrected
  • Propose and prioritise solutions according to their efficiency but also according to the characteristics and uses of the buildings and processes concerned
  • Put a figure on the necessary investments

Royal Decree 56/2016

Royal Decree 56/2016 transposes into Spanish law the Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU, which requires an Energy Audit of 85% of final energy consumption every 4 years, or to have an ISO 50.001 Energy Management System.

Objectives:

  • To promote energy efficiency in companies.
  • To analyse the energy situation of companies.
  • Detect opportunities for energy improvement.
  • Reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions.
  • To reduce external energy dependence.

Penalty regime:

Companies that fail to comply with the requirements of RD 56/2016, will be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of Law 18/2014, approving urgent measures for growth, competitiveness and efficiency with an amount of up to 60,000€.

Who it affects:

Royal Decree 56/2016 makes it compulsory for companies or groups of companies with more than 250 employees or with a turnover of more than €50 million and a balance sheet greater than €43 million to carry out energy audits every four years.

My checklist

for an energy audit

check  How much energy do I consume?

check  Where do I consume it?

check  What is the energy cost of my products/services?

check  What is the current state of my installations?

check  Can I predict my future consumption?

check  Do I manage my energy purchases correctly?

check  Is my use of the facilities correct?

check  What energy saving measures can I take?

check  What are their energy, economic and environmental performance?

check  Which measures should I prioritise?

check  How do I optimise the distribution of these measures over time?

All energy audits carried out by Eurocontrol follow the guidelines established by the UNE-EN 16247:2012 standard.

Our services

Investment grade energy audits: industry and buildings

Investment grade energy audits present a methodology similar to those of RD56/2016, but with a much greater degree of detail.
They are recommended when the management's commitment to energy efficiency is high and there is an interest in saving energy beyong complying with regulations.

Advantages:
  • In an investment grade audit, and always depending on the client's needs, it is possible to go into the detail of calculating the cost of energy needed to produce the main unit products (for benchmarking).
  • Further improvements to be implemented can be defined.
  • Detailed studies of the improvements to be implemented can be carried out, such as incorporating real quotes from installation companies (and not reference prices), etc.

Energy audits in public lighting

It is a situation analysis that allows us to know the operation, functioning and performance of lighting installations, the state of their components, their energy consumption and their corresponding operating costs, with the aim of:
  • Improve the efficiency and energy savings of these installations.
  • Adapt and adapt these installations to current regulations.
  • Limit light glare and light pollution.

The phases of the public lighting audit are:
1. Compilation of documentation and inventory
2. Measurements
  • Lighting
  • Electrical
  • Thermographic
3. Diagnosis and analysis. Proposals for improvement
4. Energy and economic analysis of the proposals
  • Description of the improvements
  • Energy and economic analysis of the proposals
  • Environmental analysis
  • Energy saving and efficiency plan (PAEE)

Eurocontrol carries out the energy audit service of all the installations of Public Institutions, advising them in the different areas for the achievement of energy savings.
