Verification of Thermometers and Thermographs

The control of health risks is based, to a large extent, on the respect of temperatures, hot or cold, which limit the proliferation of potentially pathogenic micro-organisms. It is therefore essential to be able to rely on reliable measuring instruments and to check their reliability regularly.

This regulatory verification of recording instruments must be subject to metrological control to ensure that they retain their metrological characteristics.

What is

Verification of Thermometers and Thermographs

The verification of thermometers and temperature recorders (also known as thermographs) is established in Order ITC/3701/2006, of 22 November, which regulates the State metrological control of temperature recorders and thermometers for the transport, storage, distribution and control of temperature-controlled products.

Commission Regulation (EC) No 37/2005 of 12 January 2005 determines that means of transport and warehousing and storage premises for deep-frozen foodstuffs intended for human consumption must have appropriate recording instruments to monitor at regular and frequent intervals the air temperature to which such foodstuffs are subjected.

In turn, these recording instruments (thermometers, thermographs and their dissociable sensors) must be subject to metrological control, i.e. periodic verification and verification after repair or modification, in order to ensure that they maintain their metrological characteristics.

Eurocontrol is accredited by ENAC No. OC-I/271 to perform periodic verification and verification after repair or modification of temperature recorders and in-service thermometers in the following categories:

  • Permanent Laboratory: Classes: 0,5; 1 and 2 (- 30 °C to 100°C) with external probe
  • In Situ: Classes: 0,5; 1 and 2 (- 30 °C to 100°C)

Verification of scales - non automatic weighing instruments

Non-automatic weighing instruments range from precision balances, used in laboratories to measure a few grams, to weighbridges that can measure several tons (for weighing trucks, for example). Weighing instruments are present everywhere in our daily lives: how else could we weigh our vegetables in the supermarket?
An inspection of these instruments makes it possible to limit the :

  • Safety risk: not having a device that indicates the right value can lead to changes in the manufacturing process or to accidents if the pressure levels are too high.
  • Economic risk: making a measurement error can lead to cost errors with strong repercussions.

Like any measuring instrument, weighing instruments must be checked at regular intervals to ensure that their measurements remain reliable and correct.
