LOTO: Lockout and tagout

A LOTO (Lockout, Tagout) system controls safety against all sources of energy and fluids when carrying out any maintenance or production work that could pose a risk to your personnel, your equipment or the performance of your operations.

With our specialised HOT LoToTo (Lock-out, Tag-out, Try-out) solution, which integrates the Human, Organisational and Technical variables and is based on the guidelines of the EN 17975:2025 standard, you can turn compliance requirements into sustainable risk control and operational excellence.

We advise you to guarantee safety in the maintenance operations of your facilities.

 What is LoToTo?

Any maintenance operation involving facilities or machinery that uses hazardous energy or fluids poses a risk to workers, but also to the facility itself, the environment and even the general public.

The LoToTo (Lock-out, Tag-out, Try-out) system controls the sources and key points of hazardous energy and fluid lockout to prevent them from being accidentally activated by human error or sudden failure, thus ensuring the safety of maintenance and production workers.

The LoToTo system applies to any maintenance, restoration or cleaning activity and to all types of energy (electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, kinetic and potential, pressure equipment, etc.) and all fluids (steam, oil, chemicals, etc.), even those that do not appear to be hazardous, such as drinking water.

In general, LoToTo can be applied in all industrial facilities that work with hazardous fluids, at high pressures (P>10 bar) and/or high temperatures (T>70 ºC) and where accidents may occur due to risks arising from energy or fluids.

The implementation of a comprehensive LOTO safety process involves the following 10 phases:

  1. Define the process in organisational, human and technical terms.
  2. Diagnosis of the organisation and LOTO practices.
  3. Development of a general procedure and necessary documents.
  4. Training of personnel in risk analysis for energy and fluid safety (production personnel, maintenance technicians, management personnel).
  5. Equipment analysis to secure energy and fluids through lockout
  6. Preparation of LOTO cards for machines, identifying key lockout points.
  7. Definition and implementation of safety devices (lockout and tagout accessories, padlocks, labels, LOTO boxes, etc.).
  8. Development of specific operating procedures (SOPs) that include LOTO safety.
  9. Training on application for stakeholders or other interested parties.
  10. Regular audits of process implementation.

Our technicians advise and accompany you throughout the entire process or during the phase or phases you require.

HOT LoToTo

and the new standard EN 17975:2025

The EN 17975: 2025 standard. Maintenance. Control of energy and fluid hazards in maintenance activities. This guide, which was developed with the participation of experts from the Apave Group, establishes guidelines for controlling hazards related to energy and fluids during maintenance work.

Although voluntary, it constitutes a technical standard of good practice for the standardisation of LOTO risk control in maintenance operations in Europe.

Our HOT LoToTo solution incorporates the requirements of standard EN 17975:2025 into our organisational consulting, training and technical assistance services. This means that:

  • We take into account all energies and, therefore, the specific problem of managing several risks simultaneously.
  • We apply the solution to any maintenance intervention (preventive, corrective, works, etc.) and even to routine maintenance (lubrication, cleaning, adjustment, etc.).
  • The standard covers aspects additional to the LoT-o or Lo-To-To (Lock-Out, Tag-Out, Try-Out) approach, as it includes organisational, technical and human dimensions (skills and behaviours). In this way, it is integrated with maintenance processes and safety management.

Industrial Hygiene

Countless studies have been able to demonstrate the cause-effect relationship between certain jobs and the development of certain diseases. Most of these diseases do not show obvious symptoms until after a long time, even years. It is therefore essential to approach the problem from a preventive point of view, as this is the only way to achieve an optimal state of health for the worker at the end of his or her working life. Industrial hygiene is one of the tools we can use to achieve this goal.

ergonomy in the office
Ergonomics and applied psychosociology

Ergonomics and psychosociology assess the working conditions in a work environment. The assessment will vary according to personal characteristics and the factors surrounding the workplace; it will also be necessary to assess the type of task to be carried out and its duration. To do this, our specialised technicians analyse each workstation and the most appropriate study method, in order to propose the appropriate corrective measures.
